Wetsuit or Swimskin? Find the right equipment for open water and triathlon

When you start a triathlon or open water race, your choice of equipment is crucial to your performance. Especially in swimming, the right choice of clothing can make a significant difference. At Transition Zone, we specialize in wetsuits and swimskins for triathlon and open water, and we only carry quality products from Sailfish and ZONE3 – two of the most recognized brands on the market. Whether you are swimming in cool seawater or a warm lake, we have the equipment to suit the conditions – and your ambitions.

The first step is to know the difference between a wetsuit and a swimskin. A wetsuit is used in cooler water and provides both buoyancy and thermal insulation. A swimskin is designed for situations where the water temperature is too hot for a wetsuit – typically above 24°C in official competitions – but where you still need speed and hydrodynamics. Whatever you choose, it’s all about maximizing your performance in the water.

Wetsuit for triathlon and open water – comfort, buoyancy and speed

A triathlon wetsuit isn't just an insulating layer – it's a performance tool. Modern wetsuits are designed to give you optimal buoyancy, reduced water resistance and maximum freedom of movement. This means you can lie higher in the water, swim more efficiently and conserve energy – all important when you're on the bike and then running.

At Transition Zone we only stock wetsuits from Sailfish and ZONE3, both renowned for their high-tech materials and precise fit. Their models range from beginner-friendly wetsuits to high-end competition wetsuits, developed with input from elite swimmers and professional triathletes. Their neoprene materials combine flexibility and buoyancy, and many of the models have extra thin panels at the shoulders to ensure freedom of movement.

We are happy to help you find the right size and model, so you get a wetsuit that is neither tight, lets water in – nor hinders your swimming.

Swimskins – when wetsuits are not allowed

A swimskin is your secret weapon when wetsuits aren't allowed. In warm water temperatures (summer competitions, lakes, or tropical destinations), a swimskin is often the only outer layer allowed—and it can make a surprisingly big difference. Swimskins are made from ultralight, hydrophobic materials that reduce friction and create a slick surface so you can glide through the water faster.

Unlike a wetsuit, a swimskin provides no buoyancy, but instead offers streamlining, compression and low water resistance. It is worn over your trisuit and is easy to remove in the change zone thanks to the back zipper.

We exclusively carry swimskins from Sailfish, who have positioned themselves as one of the world's leading manufacturers of competition triathlon equipment. Their models such as Rebel Pro and Rebel Team are among the most popular choices for non-wetsuit races and have been tested in both Ironman and ITU competitions.
