Cleats – the small equipment with a big impact

Cleats are one of the least visible but most crucial parts of your setup as a road or triathlete. They are the connection between your cycling shoe and pedal, and therefore play a key role in both power transfer, comfort and injury prevention. The choice of cleat affects, among other things, how much freedom of movement (float) you have, how the load is distributed in your knees and hips, and how stable you stand in the line. At Transition Zone, we carry the most widely used systems on the market: Look Keo, Shimano SPD-SL and Wahoo Speedplay – and we help you find the match that best suits your body and your riding style. Each solution has its unique advantages, but common to them all is that cleats require correct installation and regular replacement to function optimally.

Look Keo cleats – for the rider who wants to customize their setup

Look Keo cleats are some of the most widely used on the market and are used by both beginners and professionals. They are available in three variants: black (0 degrees float), grey (4.5 degrees) and red (9 degrees). The black cleat has no freedom of movement and provides maximum stability - ideal for riders with a very precise position and an efficient, controlled line. The grey model is the most versatile and preferred by many, as it provides a good balance between stability and comfort. The red cleat with a full 9 degrees of float is suitable for riders with knee problems or the need for greater mobility in the line. Regardless of the model you choose, the Look Keo system is known for its low weight, wide availability and simple function. It is easy to install, and many shoes from different brands support Keo cleats directly.

Shimano SPD-SL – reliability and wide compatibility

Shimano SPD-SL cleats are among the most robust and reliable on the market. They are often used in both exercise and competition and are available in three variants: yellow (6 degrees float), blue (2 degrees) and red (0 degrees). The yellow version is the most popular and provides good freedom of movement, reducing the strain on the knees and hips - especially relevant for riders who spend many hours in the saddle. The blue model provides more controlled movement and is aimed at riders who want a little freedom, but still a fixed position. The red is for the rider who wants full stability and direct power transfer - often a favorite among time trialists and triathletes with a precisely adjusted position. SPD-SL cleats are durable and easy to find spare parts for, and the system is compatible with a wide range of road shoes. They are easy to click in and out, which also makes them popular among riders who often stop and start, for example when training in the city.

Wahoo Speedplay – precision and adjustability in a class of its own

Speedplay cleats are a clear departure from Look and Shimano in their double-sided pedal design and extremely adjustable cleat setup. At Transition Zone, we carry both Wahoo Speedplay cleats and pedals – and they are particularly popular with triathletes and riders who place high demands on positioning and aerodynamics. Speedplay cleats allow for individual adjustment in three directions: forward/backward, side/side and rotation, making them ideal for riders with biomechanical quirks or previous injuries. The float can be adjusted up to 15 degrees, and the click-in/out mechanism is particularly easy to operate – an advantage in competitions where quick dismounts and mounts are important. The cleats are fixed to a replaceable base plate, which significantly extends their lifespan. The flat design and the ability to click in from both sides also make Speedplay a favorite among riders who want efficiency, safety and adaptability in one system.
