Wetsuit Glue – Extend the Life of Your Wetsuit and Neoprene Gear

A wetsuit is an investment. Whether you use it for triathlon, open water swimming or winter swimming, neoprene is exposed to a lot of wear and tear: nails, rocks, zippers, training, and not least frequent use and donning/doing. And sooner or later it happens: A small tear, a rip or a crack in the neoprene. This is where wetsuit glue comes into play.

With the right glue, you can easily and quickly repair your wetsuit or neoprene accessories yourself – without having to send it in for repair or buy new equipment. At Transition Zone, we recommend that all triathletes have a tube of wetsuit glue lying around – both at home and in their bag – because when the going gets tough, it’s nice to be able to act immediately.

What is wetsuit glue – and how does it work?

Wetsuit glue, also known as neoprene glue or neoprene cement, is a specially formulated adhesive for repairing tears and holes in wetsuits, neoprene gloves, socks and hoods. It is a flexible, waterproof and durable adhesive that bonds neoprene to neoprene – allowing the material to retain its elasticity.

There are two main types of wetsuit adhesive:

Contact cement (neoprene contact cement) – apply to both surfaces, allow to dry slightly, then press together. It forms a strong, instant bond.

Liquid glue (neoprene repair adhesive) – applied directly to the crack and sets as it dries. This type is especially good for small holes and surface repairs.

Most are glued correctly by:

Clean and dry the area thoroughly.

Apply glue to both sides of the tear.

Allow it to dry slightly (typically 5-10 minutes).

Press the sides together for a few minutes.

Allow to cure completely (preferably 6–12 hours) before use.

The result is a flexible, durable and waterproof repair that prevents further damage – and significantly extends the life of your equipment.

The benefits of using wetsuit glue

Being able to repair your neoprene equipment yourself offers several advantages – both practical, economical and sustainable:

Instant solution – You can patch an injury the same day it occurs – and prevent it from getting worse.

Save money – Repair is much cheaper than buying new neoprene equipment.

Extend the lifespan – A well-maintained wetsuit can last for many years.

More sustainable – Repairing rather than replacing reduces your carbon footprint and waste.

No special equipment required – All you need is glue and a little patience.

Wetsuit glue is especially useful for triathletes who use their equipment frequently and often pack it in and out. It is also ideal for winter bathers and open water swimmers, where a small damage can quickly lead to a big cold exposure. A tube of neoprene glue can also save the day during a race or training camp, when there is no time or opportunity for professional repair.

A small tear doesn’t have to be the end of your favorite suit. With wetsuit glue in your bag, you’re always prepared, and you’ll save time, money and frustration. At Transition Zone, we have glue that works – and we’re happy to help you choose the right solution for your wetsuit or neoprene gear.
