What is a swimming board and why is it indispensable?

A kickboard – also known as a kickboard – is a simple but incredibly effective piece of equipment used by swimmers of all ages and levels. The typical kickboard is made of lightweight foam and is shaped to be easy to hold with your hands while swimming. Using a kickboard provides support for your upper body, freeing up your legs for targeted leg kick training. This makes the kickboard an indispensable training tool – whether you are a beginner, an elite swimmer or a triathlete.

The swimming board is primarily used to isolate the leg kick and improve both strength and technique in the lower body. It allows the swimmer to focus on the leg work without having to think about arm pull and breathing at the same time. It is also a good tool for building endurance and stability in the leg kick – something that is essential for efficient and energy-saving swimming, especially in the triathlon discipline. The board is used in all swimming styles, but is particularly popular in crawl and breaststroke training. It is also a regular element in many swimming club technique programs and should also be in the training arsenal of every ambitious swimmer.

Benefits of integrating a swim plate into your training

Using a swim board has a number of training benefits. Firstly, it forces the swimmer to work intensively with their legs. By removing the arm pull and allowing the upper body to rest on the board, the leg kick becomes the primary driving force in swimming. This increases both the strength of the leg muscles – especially in the thighs, hips and calves – and improves the efficiency and rhythm of the kick.

Another important advantage is that a swimming board allows you to hone your technique. Many swimmers tend to use unnecessary energy in their kicks, either because the kicks are too big, too deep or come from the knees instead of the hips. With a swimming board, you get direct feedback from the water, and it becomes easier to feel how small adjustments to the kick affect your propulsion. This allows you to work very purposefully on building a strong and stable leg kick.

The swim board can also be used in combination with a snorkel, pull buoy or flippers to tailor the training to different needs. For example, it can be used with short flippers to provide extra resistance and further strengthen the legs. Or it can be used in technical exercises where you focus on hip movement and body line. So there are many ways to vary the training – and the swim board is the key to doing so.

What type of swimming board should you choose?

There are different types of swim boards, and it is important to choose the model that best suits your needs and level. The most common type is the classic rectangular board with rounded corners, which provides good buoyancy and is easy to handle. This type is well suited for beginners and recreational swimmers, as it provides maximum stability and support.

More advanced swimmers and triathletes often prefer ergonomically shaped plates, which are designed to provide better grip and increased flexibility during training. These plates typically have notches or handles and are often slightly smaller in size, forcing the swimmer to work harder to stay afloat – and thus get more out of their training. Some models are even designed with hydrodynamics in mind, so they provide the least possible resistance and help the swimmer maintain a good body position in the water.
